7 Days at Hotel Mesón del Marqués in Valladolid, Yucatan
The small town of Valladolid in Yucatan is a colonial pearl. It’s really worth spending a few days there. We have been there for a week and explored the city and the sights of the area. We stayed at the Hotel Mesón del Marqués. And that was a very good decision. Here we wat to share our experiences with you.

Reasons for staying at Hotel Mesón del Marqués
There is not such a wide range of hotels in Valladolid as there is in Cancún or in Playa del Carmen. And many accommodations are kept rather simple. But since we had just come from an all-inclusive hotel in Playacar, we wanted to feel just as comfortable in Valladolid.
The Mesón del Marqués is one of the best hotels in town. The location is excellent – both for exploring locally and for discovering the surrounding area. The rooms are pleasant and the service is very nice. In addition, the hotel offers a very tasty restaurant. For us, the Hotel Mesón del Marqués was the right decision.
Location of the hotel
The hotel is a beautiful, colonial building from old times. And its location is prime – right on the Zocaló, the city’s central main square. Just across the street is a large park where there is always a lot going on. Nevertheless, it is somehow the island of peace in the city center.
On the other side of the park is the famous Cathedral of San Servacio. The view from the hotel is just magnificent. And all the sights of the city are also within easy walking distance. In the vicinity you will find many restaurants and boutiques.
Even the tourist bus for the city tour has its stop just around the corner. Therefore, at Mesón del Marqués you always have a good starting point for your adventures.
By car at the hotel
We were with a rental car in Valladolid. Of course… we also wanted to discover the surrounding area. If you come to the city by car, parking at your accommodation is absolutely necessary.
The narrow streets of the colonial city offer few opportunities to park vehicles. And if you’re tired from a long trip, you probably don’t want to spend a long time looking for a parking space or walk far to the hotel.
The Hotel Mesón del Marqués has its own parking lot in the backyard. The entrance is at the back, just in the first street after the main square with its park. The car park is constantly monitored. The nice team there will assign you a place for your car.
In case the parking lot in the courtyard is full, the hotel has an agreement with another guarded parking lot for its guests. Again, this place is just a few steps away from the hotel. But we never needed it, we always found a place in the yard. During our stay, the hotel was over 90% occupied.
Rooms at Hotel Mesón del Marqués
The rooms at Hotel Mesón del Marqués are antique and attractive. The décor fits well with the colonial building. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms have everything you need after a hot day in the Yucatan sun. Everything is very clean.
Our room was on the 4th floor of the hotel. Of course there is an elevator, don’t worry! There is also Wi-Fi everywhere. We had air conditioning, but we didn’t use it. Although it was 36° C outside, we were happier with the ceiling fan.
To the courtyard we had a wooden door with a small balcony. This was very pleasant to let fresh air pass through the room. And to have daylight. To the main square, there was the access to the room and the bathroom. So, the room was actually really quiet for this busy part of the city.
The Rooftop Terrace
One thing I particularly liked – the hotel has a beautiful rooftop terrace on the fourth floor. With comfortable sofas and armchairs to relax in. The view of the cathedral and the park is just fantastic. Both during the day and at night.
I don’t think this terrace is known to many hotel guests. We only discovered it because it was right in front of our room. But it was a really great place where we enjoyed spending time.
In the evening after a busy day, we often made ourselves comfortable here with cold beer or a good bottle. On two other terraces in the immediate vicinity there were restaurants and bars, which were actually always full. So, there was always pleasant music right next door in the program.
During our time at the Hotel Mesón del Marqués there was also a full moon. It was unplanned. But of course, this night on the terrace was particularly romantic. We also took a lot of pictures. Unfortunately, we are not the great masters when it comes to night photos.
The restaurant at Hotel Mesón del Marqués
We had booked our room with breakfast at the hotel. We thought anything else would be pointless. If you want to leave early in the morning for your tours, there is little incentive to quickly look for a restaurant for breakfast.
It was a good decision. Because the restaurant at Hotel Mesón del Marqués is beautiful and the breakfast was a nice experience every day. The building has a quiet, open courtyard with arcades. A really great, colonial ambiance. There, the tables are set at any time of the day.
In the middle of the courtyard, there is a green area with a babbling fountain. In one corner, a large tree is growing, its blossoms and leaves reaching over the roof terrace on the fourth floor. On the walls, there are colorful Mexican pictures. Everything is very lovingly decorated.
Breakfast includes coffee, water, and freshly squeezed orange juice. There was also fresh, warm bread with papaya jam. You can choose from a selection of about ten different dishes – all with eggs in some form. And all very tasty. My favorites were huevo con chaya (eggs with Mexican herbs) and the Desayuno Albanil (construction worker’s breakfast, eggs with chicken soup). But I also tried other variants and all of them were very tasty without exception.
If the choice is not enough for you, there are other breakfast dishes for which a small surcharge is due. But the price is not very high. Delicious fruit juices are also served in all kinds of mixtures. Also, for a small surcharge, but it’s certainly worth it.
Excursions in the surrounding area
The center of Valladolid, with its beautiful sights, is a wonderful place to explore from the Hotel Mesón del Marqués. On the one hand, this is thanks to the first-class location directly opposite the cathedral. The hotel also provides tourist information on the most important places in the city. City map included.
There is a sightseeing bus in the city for visitors. The bus stop is right next to the hotel. You will find it also at the city park on the first street at the right, when you leave the hotel through the restaurant. The bus looks good and is certainly pleasant because of the heat in Yucatan. But we didn’t use it, but explored everything on foot.
If you’ve decided to stay in Valladolid for several days, you’re probably here with a rental car. The Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá and the ancient city of Ek Balam with the Mayan villages in its vicinity are within easy reach for you. There are tons of cenotes to swim in – you just have to choose.
The beautiful colonial city of Izamal is also within easy reach. To get to Mérida and the Gulf Coast in the north, the way is a bit further and not really suitable for a day trip. But it won’t be boring.
If you don’t want to drive yourself all the time, ask the hotel about the offers for excursions. They will certainly be happy to help you. Or just get yourself a ticket for the Tren Maya and enjoy a ride on the train.
Swimming Pool
Well, you can’t go exploring every day. At least that was our experience. Because after several days of pyramid climbing and cenote swimming in the heat of Yucatán, we were tired at some point.
You have to know, during our stay it was significantly hotter in Valladolid than in the coastal region of Cancún and Playa del Carmen. And probably nothing will change during the whole year.
Hotel Mesón del Marqués has a swimming pool. It’s not huge, but it’s a comfortable size for a refreshing swim. Part of the day it is in the shade, but with the heat in the region, this is not a disadvantage at all.
In any case, after many exciting adventures, we just layed down by the pool for a day. The loungers are comfortable, umbrellas are provided, and the hotel bar is just a few steps away. A wonderful opportunity to rest from all the exciting things and just let yourself be pampered.
Evenings at Hotel Mesón del Marqués
Hotel Mesón del Marqués is an extremely popular meeting place in Valladolid with its central location and good gastronomy. The restaurant Hostería del Marqués under the arcades in the leafy courtyard is actually well frequented at any time of the day. And it’s not just guests of the hotel – there are also a lot of guests coming in from the street.
In the evenings it gets a lot busier and livelier. The restaurant offers a delicious selection of Mexican specialties and attracts a lot of guests. The ambience is really nice. My husband invited me to dinner, and absolutely everything was perfect. A very romantic evening in a colonial setting.
But that’s not all. In the evenings, there is also the rooftop bar Don Diablo on the roof terrace. This is a really nice open-air restaurant with a spectacular view of the park and the cathedral. There’s really good music playing there – just the right volume to relax. But without disturbing the rooms.
The rooftop restaurant was very busy every night. But who is surprised? It is certainly one of the absolute highlights in Valladolid.
Is Hotel Mesón del Marqués worth staying?
But yes, of course! At least that was my impression after our stay of a whole week. The town of Valladolid deserves much more than just the short transit that is common on tourist buses. It’s really a great place to spend several days there.
And while you’re there, Hotel Mesón del Marqués is sure to be one of the best options you can find. It’s not just the beautiful colonial building and the friendly service everywhere.
The great location, the spectacular view, the wonderful restaurant, the swimming pool and also the well-kept parking – it all contributed to our perfect holiday. Anyway, we had a great time and were really excited.
Book Hotel Mesón del Marqués online
My partner had invited me to this holiday, and he also took care of the organization of our trip. I was lucky enough to just get on the plane and then let myself be pampered. But as far as I know, he reserved our room on Booking.com. Here I have prepared a link for you in case you want to have a look.
